1.4 billion people can eat vegetables all the year round. Why can China do that?

Mohe, the northernmost part of China, has a winter temperature below - 40 ℃;

The average annual precipitation in Western China is only 9 days;

The Qinghai Tibet Plateau in Southwest China has an average altitude of over 4000 meters.

Living in such a diverse land, 1.4 billion Chinese can still eat vegetables all the year round.

Why can China do it?

Over the past decade or so,

China's vegetable production has been increasing,

It ranked first in the world for consecutive years,

Moreover, the growth rate of vegetable yield is higher than the expansion of sowing area.

China is also providing more and more vegetables to the world.

Why can China eat vegetables in winter?

In northern China, the temperature drops rapidly after autumn,

Especially in winter, the soil gradually freezes,

There are five to six months when you can't grow outdoor plants.

Technology has solved this big problem.

Through greenhouse planting, etc,

Fresh vegetables can be produced in northern China in winter.

From 2006 to 2016,

The area of protected vegetables in China has increased by about 1.6 million mu per year on average,

Close to the size of Los Angeles.

Today's protected vegetables are no longer simple "greenhouses",

It's about improving the vegetable production environment through science and technology,

For example, automatic irrigation and ventilation equipment are connected through intelligent system,

The light, heat and insect pests were monitored.

Some of the most important vegetables in China come from protected cultivation,

The total annual output of protected vegetables is nearly 300 million tons and the value is more than 100 billion US dollars.

China has also established six major vegetable producing areas according to different geographical climate (northern high latitude summer and autumn vegetable dominant area, Huang Huai Hai and Bohai Rim protected vegetable dominant area, Loess Plateau Summer and autumn vegetable dominant area, Yangtze River Basin winter and spring vegetable dominant area, Yunnan Guizhou Plateau Summer and autumn vegetable advantage area, South China and southwest hot region winter and spring vegetable dominant area),

At least three producing areas can produce vegetables in each season,

So as to meet the demand of vegetables in China.

How can China feed 1.4 billion people?

China is the most populous country in the world,

But the per capita vegetable consumption has reached the first in the world.

The growth of vegetable production benefits from multiple factors,

On the one hand, the government ensures the land area for agricultural production through legislation and other means,

We must resolutely stop the use of such land for building houses or for other purposes,

The most important thing is that the progress of science and technology has promoted the continuous increase of vegetable yield in China.

More than 10000 vegetable varieties have been registered in China,

Through strengthening the breeding of vegetable varieties and improving the breeding methods,

Chinese vegetable varieties are better in quality, disease resistance and high yield,

It is especially suitable for facility cultivation.

In saline alkali land, the annual yield of improved Zizania latifolia is 2000 kg / mu,

More and more vegetable varieties can also be planted.

What kind of vegetables will China have in the future?

At the same time of keeping the number champion,

China also wants to be the champion of vegetable quality.

Because of the increasing use of technology,

Almost all attempts to reduce the use of pesticides in the countryside,

Pesticide use in China has been declining for many years,

The use of chemical fertilizer continued to grow zero.

Vegetable production is also more automated,

More accurate cultivation.

Now, China is carrying out supply side structural reform,

Through the adjustment of production source, we can provide consumers with better quality products,

It will bring more and better vegetables to China and the world.
